| Campo de Fiori’s Espresso Martini |
When I overheard that my friend’s husband jokingly banned her from indulging in our Espresso Martinis, I knew we were on to something. A sophisticated cocktail that is almost a dessert, it certainly packs a punch. The potent libation is impossible to resist. When one of my bartenders begins crafting this delicious martini and the aroma of coffee and chocolate teases the packed bar, many rounds are sure to follow.
And that’s when things can get interesting.
Campo bartender Jason Houston, the man behind our famous recipe, was introduced to the Espresso Martini while tending bar at the Boarding House on Nantucket Island. Jason traveled west and eventually joined Campo in 2005, and his recipe was perfected with rich Italian Lavazza espresso. Since then, this delicious drink has become a crowd favorite.
When Jason started working at Campo, he shared his signature martini, which was apparently something of a legend on Nantucket. We were about to see firsthand what could happen when we introduced his famous concoction to Aspenites. During one of Jason’s first nights behind the bar, a bachelorette party wandered into Campo. Within minutes, the group had spotted the new cocktail on the menu and the first round was ordered. Several rounds later, all members of the group were on top of the bar treating our patrons to their rendition of an x-rated “Footloose.” We were there until the pre-dawn hours replacing rogue ceiling tiles and sweeping up shards of glass.
This potent brew will be on the Campo menu for a long, long time.
