Best Address: 442 West Bleeker Street
Built in 1885 for Henry Webber, respected businessman and publisher of The Aspen Daily Leader, this designated-landmark mansion is built in Second Empire style, with dormers in its mansard roof. Webber was responsible for the construction of the Elks Building and the Webber Block (now home to the Isis Theater). Walter Paepcke bought it in 1944 and it was repainted pink. Perhaps he knew the future of his little Rocky Mountain town would be just as bright.
Where to Dine
Get your fingers dirty at the Hickory House (730 W. Main, 970-925-2313), where lip-smacking BBQ ribs and saucy chicken are on the menu. (Note: It’s also popular for its hangover-friendly breakfasts.) Plato’s at The Aspen Meadows Resort (845 Meadows Dr., 866-460-1533) offers more sophisticated fare, with local ingredients plucked from the restaurant’s own garden. The Bauhaus-inspired design coupled with epic views make it, hands-down, one of the most beautiful places in town to eat.
Fitness Finds
Housed in the elegant blue Victorian on the corner of Fourth Street and Main is O2 Aspen, a yoga/Pilates studio, spa and retail store. In addition to a full schedule of classes, O2 offers designer activewear and casual clothing by Lululemon Athletica, Susana Monaco and Nicole Miller. If strolling is more your style, walk to one of the West End’s kid-friendly parks. Look for the old gazebo at Pioneer Park (corner of West Bleeker Street and South Third Street), or take the kids to the aptly named Triangle Park (North Second Street and West Smuggler Street), where three surrounding roads and a pint-size playground make it the perfect gathering place.
