Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

Aspen Peak caught up with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac at the Rossignol by JC de Castelbajac show at this year’s Aspen Fashion Week festivities. Here’s what he had to say:

How do you design differently for your skiwear collaboration with Rossignol than your ready-to-wear?
JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC: Snow is like a stage. It’s a blank canvas. Your imagination is more powerful when you don’t know everything. I find my designs for Rossignol more conceptual, whereas my RTW collection takes on more of an intellectual process.

Your latest RTW collection in Paris was influenced by the surrealism of Man Ray and Duchamp and promoted what you call a “new elegance.” Where do you get your inspiration for all of these various collections?
JCDC: By accident. I’m inspired by everyday life, whether it’s pattern on a floor, art, music, cinematography or the Internet.

You have a close relationship with the music world. Whom have you worked with?
JCDC: Beyoncé, Mark Ronson, Rihanna, LL Cool J, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Kanye West

What do you see as the future of fashion?
JCDC: Most established brands are very institutional, while the younger designers are very progressive. I like “the blur.” I want to see a mixture. Performance Ski, 408 S. Hunter St.; jcdcstore.com
