One Love Organics Rose Aromatic Body Serum.
Southern belle Suzanne LeRoux left a high-profile job as a lawyer to create One Love Organics, a naturally inspired, of-the-moment beauty line. (We’re obsessed with the Essentials To Go Travel Kit that’s caught Oprah’s attention.) Throughout the month of October—in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month—One Love Organics is donating 10 percent of the sales price from the Rose Aromatic Body Serum ($39) to benefit the Ashley Caddell Breast Cancer Treatment Fund. Caddell, a San Diego resident and athlete (who loves Aspen, too) was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Employing precious oils to nourish the skin, the serum is created especially for the body, and couples aromatherapy with potent natural actives and an emollient blend of organic plant oils. We recently caught up with LeRoux, who dished on her inspiration and beauty secrets.
What was your "a-ha" moment in creating One Love Organics?
I created One Love Organics to offer a simpler approach to beauty. After the birth of my two sons, who are 20 months apart, I felt an overwhelming need to simplify everything, including my beauty routine. I wanted to get back to the essentials. For me, the essentials needed to be effective, pure, safe for my whole family, of the highest quality and serve multiple purposes to earn a spot on my bathroom counter. For example, I dreamt of a cleanser that was great for my face that I could also use in the tub with my babies. I imagined a moisturizer that worked not only for me, but also my husband and my boys. We focus on a few supreme products, not up-selling a medicine cabinet full of mysterious jars. Women have really responded to and appreciate our honesty. You really don’t need a bunch of “stuff” to look great and have a truly effective routine.
You changed careers from being a lawyer to organic beauty alchemist. How does your analytical background translate to beauty products?
I use the research and analysis skills I gained during my career as a lawyer to determine what is actually beneficial to the skin and what is not. Like most lawyers, I don’t just accept the conventional way but instead look for what is truly the best way—often the road less traveled. I am not afraid to explore both sides of the coin and take an objective approach to a solution, whether it pertains to making a final decision to include a certain ingredient or to help finalize our latest formula. Only what is necessary for formulation and what is best for the skin gets included in our products.
What essential oil or natural ingredient are you currently most obsessed with?
Hands down, chia! Our signature oil, Supercritical Chia, is a fast-absorbing, pure and fragrance-free Omega-3 oil. It’s derived from the ancient super-food chia, which is the richest botanical source of Omega 3 fatty acids found in nature. We have the only super-critically extracted beauty oil on the market. With its unique composition and superior CO2 extraction method, our supercritical chia oil is unmatched in its purity, efficacy, and stability.
What is the biggest myth in using natural beauty products, versus chemical?
That it doesn’t work. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Our products are based on healthy and organic plant oils. Pure plant oils, rich in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, are vital to well being, health and beauty and are perfect for all skin types. Some of the benefits of using plant based skin care include: (1) Plant oils help fortify and strengthen the skin’s own natural protective barrier, which is vital to overall skin health. (2) Plant oils nourish the skin with moisture, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, while still allowing the skin to breathe and eliminate toxins. (3) Plant oils are also the best choice for oily and acneic skin. Overproduction of sebum, your skin’s own natural oil, can be a response to harsh and aggressive products. Light, nourishing plant oils helps eliminate overproduction of sebum, calms the skin and helps achieve balance.
There are a lot of new organic beauty lines on the market. What sets One Love apart?
We are absolutely passionate about making products. That is the basis of our business and it is what absolutely makes us unique. Most companies hire a third party manufacturer but we wanted to be intimately involved with the process, ingredients and the final outcome. So we have put a lot of time, effort, and resources into building a great facility where we craft each piece we sell on St. Simons Island, Georgia, and we love it. Our passion and skin care crafting skills set us apart from other lines where the primary focus is marketing.
